OPOTIKI TROOP HOLDS SUCCESSFUL DAY IN OPEN
(From
The First Opotiki Scout Troop met at their headquarters last Saturday morning under the command of the district seouter (the Rev. N. F. Benham). The Fix Patrol, commanded by Patrol Leader Upton, were sent off to observe the movements of the remainder on their journeyfrom the Otara Bridge to the Hukuwai Beach. Two scouts of the Eagle Patrol managed to reach the beach without being observed, a very creditable performance. When all had reached the beach, a trail was followed over the sandhills, a route which proved to be very sliflxcult for some of the junior members. Lunch was the next item on the programme, when one scout succeeded in passing his cooking test for the second class badge. After lunch, a despatch run was conducted through the lupins, three scouts being sent out to a point about half a mile away with instructions to try to get back without being caught. One scout managed to get through remarkably quickly and said when he reached the base, "Oh, I could hear some of the fellows talking and got past them quite easily." With scouts "silence is golden." After this another short trail was followed quite successfully, while a court of honour was being held by the patrol leaders. The afternoon concluded with a spirited cricket match, in which the Eagle Patrol were victorious by the narrow margin of one run. Next parade: — Headquarters, Saturday, October 1, at 7.30 p.m. Patrol on duty: — Eagle.
