Waitoa^ Tuesday. fhe Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. F. L. Harker, said in an interview, that the gfeater part of Zm&M had apparently forgotten that Wairoa
recently had a disastrous earthq;Uake, as the r esponse to the appeal had been most disdppointing. Out of approximately £800 received in Wairoa so far over £600 came from Napier and Hastings, towns which could i 11 alford it after the disaster of 1931. The residents of these towns, however, knoW .what a disaster of this land meant. Many of them had visited Waitoa sincfe the 'quake and had persorially inspected the plight of the town and district. The Mayor further said that Unless real substantial assistance was coming the position of the whole district will be most serious. He sincOrely hoped that the rest of New Zealand would realise the position and come to the assistance of -the strickeii areas. An exceptionally sharp shock was experienced at 4.20 this afternoon and caused mUch c6h6erri, being of lengthy duratiOn. No further damage is feported. A secohd sharp jolt was felt at 6.15 p.m., but this was not serious.
