BOARD CONSIDERS PROVI3ION OF EARTHQUAKE EXITS The monthly meeting of the Rotorua High School Board was held last evening, the following being present, Mr. R. B. Nesbitt (chairman), Messrs. H. A. Goudie, W. Steele, Dr. H. Bertram, Archdeacon Chatterton and Mrs. I. M. Davidson. In his report for the months of August and September, the headmaster, Mr. W. G. Harwood, said that it had become the practice to use the school drive as a thoroughfare from Pukuatua Street to Pererika Street, with the result that on the night of September 13 a gate had been smashed. He said he had now instructed the caretalcer to close the entrances to the grounds. Mr. Harwood also reporteJ that Mr. R. Gardner had donated a prize to the value of £1 ls for the best speech on a g'iven subject. The topic chosen for competition this year is "A New Zealand Governor," and the conditions of the award demand that in the winner's speech shall be a reproduction of some public utterance of the official about whom he has chosen to speak. Separate prizes are to be awarded for boys and girls. After discussing- the provision of earthquake exits for the school building, the secretary was instructed to write to the Education Department pointing out the urgency of the matter, owing to the building apparently being situated on a fault line.
