He spoke on the gallows for nine minutes, the longest that any .condemned man in the annals of VictoN.an prispns has spolcen. Bennett heard his crimipal record and declar.ed that false evidence had been given against him in sex cases. He complained of an unfair trial, and of withholding of impprtant evidence, and made aHegations of brutality against the police. Death was instantaneous. Bennett, who had a particuiarly bad record of sexual offences .and crimes of violence, wqs sentenced to death for a bestial offence against a four year. old girl.
