Dog's Keen Hearing.
Yet another faculty which may be attributed to that intelligent animal, the dog, is a keen ear for a particular make of motor-engine. People interested in cars know that each make and model has a distinctive sound, though often an expert would find the distinction difficult to detect if he had to rely on his ear alone. There is a collie dog in Invercargill whose master owns a small car of a popular make. Whenever the dog hears the sound of a similar car h'e evinces signs of intense excitement, chases off in pursuit of the vehicle, or jumps around it with tail-wagging in eager recognition. As the make of car is one of the bestlcnown, the dog encounters frequent disappointments if his impression is that he has found his master on each occasion. This, however, has no effect on his enthusiasm. He is not addicted to chasing cars, as many dogs are, and shows no interest in vehicles of any other make.
