GANDHI'S FAST

to be released from gaol and stay in private residence. The Government's intentions regarding Mahatma Gandhi, in view of his vow to hegin on the 20th to "fast unto death" were announced in the Legislative Assembly at Simla this affcernoon, and are set out in the following statement issued hy the India Office in London: — "It has been decided that as soon as Gandhi aetually begins his fast he is to be removed from the gaol to a suitable place, a private residence, and the only restriction that will be imposed upon him there, as at present contemplated, is that he should he served with an order directing him to remain there. "It is hoped it will prove unnecessary to impose any further restriction on Gandhi, but this is a matter that will dephnd primarily on whether the liberty accorded. him is found to lend itself to the promotion of the civil disobedience movement or any similar agitation directed against the Government or to affect the maintenance of law and order."
