UNEMPLOYMENT
LOCAL RELIEF COMMITTEE CONSIDERS POSITION IN DISTRICT A meeting of the Whakatane Unemployxxxent Committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr. W. Sulliv'an presiding. The secretary reported that very few single men had gone to camp at Pongakawa. Fifteen had been exempt and the balance, totalliug about 27, had been written off the register. The present position of the register in this district disclosed that 53 4A men were working and 204 were woi'kixxg under Scheme No. 5. Ten 4B contracts had been arranged, and a further 19 applications had been received. The secretary was instructed to px*epare for pxxblication a statement slxowing the advantages to the farnier under the 4B scheme. The meeting was of the opinion that the scheme was the best one yet inaugurated by the Unexnployment Board. The prixxciple of this scheme is that the farnier who wishes to have development work done, merely agi*ees upon a cei'tain price for the woi'k, conditional, of course, upon the registration of the contractors as unemployed. The inspecting officer then decides as to whether the work proposed to be done conforms to the regulations and if so, 50 per cent. of the contract piuce is found by the Unemploynxent Board. The scheme provides for a greater measure of independence and incentive as far as the worker is concei'ned and is not subject to abuse which is prevalent witli workers under the 4A scheme.
