GOOD LEPPING
POINT-TO-POINT GREENHEAD'S STABLE HAS THREE WINS AT HUNT CREINA'S KING'S DOUBLE Glorious weather, an excellent attendance and some iritei'esting racing all went to make the first Point-to-Point meeting of the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty Hunt Club since its registration, a memorable gathering. The public turned out in iull foroe and were rewarded by a fine day's sport. The races were allowed to slip badly in timing and were very late in ending, the last race being run in gathering dusk. A feature of the day was the suceess of the Rotorua horses, jGreenhead's stable notehing three wins, a double with Creina's King and one with Morley. Dr. Bertram, 'the president, had also a win and a- second with Galatea. Unfortunately it was found necessary to disqualify Authordox, the winner of the first race, since ha had previously won a registered*. race at Tauranga and the race was awarded to Master Albyn with Galatea second and Mascot placed third. Otherwise things passed off pleasantly enough. Results : — HEAVY WEIGHT STEEPLE S MASTER ALBYN, Mr. W. J. Tanner's b g, aged, Glen Albyn — unknown, 12.7, owner 1 GALATEA, Dr. H. The Heavyweight provided an exciting finish between the Whakataneowned Authordox and Master Albyn, who looked a trifie pursy but stayed better than he appeared likely to do. They got away to an even start and past the stand the first time Galatea led Perhaps, Master Albyn and Billy. The lastnamed ran off at the second fence. When they got to the sod wall Galatea had a three length break on Perhaps, Master Albyn, Mascot, Authordox, with the rest tailed off. On the second round Authordox improved his position and ran to the front and 'when he got to the double, the first fence of which he levelled, he had a 20 length lead of Galatea, followed by Master Albyn, Mascot and Berhaps. In the succeeding round Authordox maintained his pace, again levelling the double and first fence, but Master Albyn gradually overhauled him and at the third to last fence had taken the lead with a two length advantage. In the run home, there was a ding-dong go with superior riding just letting Authordox get his neck in front. The third horse, Galatea, was fully two furlongs away, followed by Mascot, Perhaps and Springbok. Billy was pulled up after breaking some of his gear. Only Three Finish. The Hunter's Trial saw only three finish, for Mahia and Morley ran off at the first fence and Omataroa fell, whilst Authordox, Day Abbey, McGlu'sky and Tarrapeen (the lastnamed ineligible) were scratched and Bert Hinkler was pulled up. Mahia was first up to the initial fence, but ran off and Ironic, Creina's King, Omataroa, Bert Hinkler and Golden England was the order, Morley running off also. There was not much change in the first round, the order past the stand being much the same. At the sod wall, the second time, Creina's King had taken charge from Ironic, with Omataroa improving his position in the third berth. He was ridden into the jump and crashed. The third time round saw Creina's King staying on well to beat Ironic by 20 lengths, with Golden England a similar distance back, third. Bert Hinkler was pulled up. The race was run at a good clip for hunters, the two and a half miles being covered in 6m 25 2-5s. Pipped on the Post That a race is never won till the post is passed was shown in the Ladies' Steeples when Moonbeam who had a commanding lead was 'eased up and Galatea under the whip snatched it off him. The first fence saw Eldorado, Don and Manera run off. Kitchener, Moonbeam, Dolly, Galatea, Diana and Blue Train was the early ord.n- and when they settled down Moonbeam went into the lead from Kitchener with Dolly, Galatea, Don, Diana and Blue Train following. The last named's saddle slipped and his rider finished bareback. Moonbeam was l'eading at the sodwall from Kitchener and over the double these two were together from Galatea, Dolly and Diana. The race resolved itself between four and Moonbeam had a four lengths lead into the straight where he was eased at the false post to see Galatea, well-ridden, beat him by a neck with Diana in third berth six lengths back. Then came Dolly, E1 Dorado (who went back to take the t jump she missed) and Blue Train sad- ! oleless. The time was comparatively | good. Creina's King's Double Scratchings reduced the Open Steeples to five when Bert Hinkler, I Day Abbey, Golden England, Mahia, j McClusky and Springbok failed to ! face the flag. The field was soon rei duced to four for Authordox tipped j out at the first fence, while Morley ran off two fences later. This left | Creina's King, Ironic and Tarrapeen j to contest the issue. Creina's King J who feneed very fast, soon went j into the lead from Ironic with Tarra- ■ peen, whose rider must have had very j stiff arms that night, pulling double in third berth. Howls of "let his head go!" from I the stand greeted Tarrapeen's passj ing, but though she fenced better f.han eiiher of the others, she was a | ; eaten mare half a mile from home. In the second round. Ironic momentarily took the lead but Creina's King who may find jumping his metier, won comfortably by ten lengths with Ironic 25 lengths ahead of Tarrapeen. This made a double for the popular Rotorua owner and a good deal of the credit must go to the rider, C. Steele who used considerable judgment in his fencing. Another to Greenhead The Rotorua stable turned out its third winner for the day when Morley, who had started twice and run off, took the Lightweight Steeples
after making most of the running from Omataroa with the rest beaten off. Mahia and Silver Mabel ran off at the first fence, and Morley went out to make the pace from Omataroa and Moonbeam, with Skylark in striking distance and the rest well back. When a round had gone, there was obviously only the pair irvit, for Moonbeam Was tiring and EL Dorado and Skylark were not fencing too cleanly. The leading pair went right away from the rest, and Moonbeam levelled both fences of the double on the second circuit. Morley lasted long enough to beat Omataroa by four lengths with the others headed by E1 Dorado three furlongs- back. Moonbeam was fourth and the rest did not appear in the picture. Five Furlong Scurry The gathering dusk prevented any coherent description of the pony scurry which was won by a small girl on a bay pony with a lad on a roan second and a bob-tailed bay third. The trotting system of handicapping was used and the winner received a big start — about a furlong.
