BIG CONTRACT

ROTORUA MAN SUCCESSFUL FOR GOVT. BUILDING . TENDER A Government tender of considerable size, and which will directly and indirectly stimulate activity in a number of Rotorua businesses, was recently secured by Mr. George. Lodge a 'Rotorua builder, who is carrying out, to the order of the. Government, the erection of a large number of four-roomed cottages, which are to be used in connection with the Government's unemployment land settlement policy. Through the combination of the facilities of several Rotorua firms, it has been possible for the tenderer to submit a price which has attraeted favourable attention from outside districts. This particular tender is for 19 cottages, which are to be erected at Pongakawa, and which under the terms of the agreement, must be completed within 16 weeks. Each dwelling is of four rooms, with a bathroom, concrete copper and tubs, sink, range, open fireplace, tank, sump drainage, and match-lined throughout. All the timber in connection with the work is being supplied by the Wilson Timber Company from its mills at Te Whaiti, where additional machinery has been installed to cope with the extra work. The timber is cut to specified dimensions at the local faetory of the Rotorua Joinery and ; Furnishing Company, and is then transferred to Mr. Lodge, who will carry out the actual construction work. It is estimatcd that approximately 150,000 feet of timber will be carted in connection with the contract, and the'transportation work will be carried out by Goodsons Liniited, who have recently purchased a large and up-to-date model truck, which is capable of carrying out the. work with the expedition which is necessary under the terms of the contract. A considerable fillip will be given to business locally as a result of the work connected with this contract. Building work of this nature directly and indirectly, affords employment to a large number of men, bushmen, sawmill hands, carriers, carpenters, and other interdependent tradesmen, and the fact that the contract has been placed locally may therefore, be regarded with a considerable measure of satisfaction, not only hy the firms concerned, but by the community as a whole.
