Hastings, Tuesday. All relief workers are on strike as the result of the foreman on a job dbmissing nine men, who refused to take off their coats when working, Following this incide.nt and other complaints, a meeting to-day condemned the new scheme of relief work still in operation, and demanded the reinstatement of the old schc.me, and the abolition of compulspry carnps. AU relief works were deelared blaek until the demands are acceded to. The Mayor, Mr. G. M. Roach, attended the meeting, and suggested that the dismissed men come with him and face the foreman conceraed, Mr. McGill, but the meeting disapproved this course, demanding that the foreman be brought to the meeting, to which the Mayor deelined to agree. The men's meeting resumed this afternoon, with the result that a dej:sion was reached not to aecept work if Mr. McGill is retained as foreman. Arrange.ments were discuss ed for oxtending the strike to outlying districts. It was d.ecided to take a firjn ?tand until the demands are acceded to. A special meeting of the local unemployment committee, to-night, decided to invite the parties to the Beatson Pax*k dispute at the confer•nce to-morrow.
