-By Telegraph — Ccpyright).
Calcutta, Sept. 19. Gandhi to-day began his fast, which will eontinue till a settlement is reached of the difference between the caste Hindus and the depa*essed classes, otherwise known as the "untouchabl'es." A wave of national fervour has swept over Hindu India as the result of Gandhi's resolve. Hindus of all classes and castes are coming together in an effort to bring ahout unity, so that Gandhi's deathfast may be unnecessary. In B'enares thousands of untouchables of the lowest castes were allowed to bathe in the sacred water, where for thousands of years only the highest caste Hindus have been allowed.
