LOCAL AND GENERAL

Runaway Horse Some excitement was created just before noon on Friday when a horse harnessed to a milk float, suddenly bolted and raced down St John's Street towards the Showgrounds The horse was driven by Miss D Lee who had a most trying experience before the runaway animal was finally balted. Several people gave chase in an endeavour to stop the horse's headlong career, and Mr. L. Carruthers, jumping from a motor truck had the reins torn from his clasp as he clutehed at them. The runaway was finally checked hy a young Maori, after it had slowed down further up' the street. Fortunately no damage was done and Miss Lee was none the worse for her unpl'easant experience. Opotiki Jockey Club A misunderstanding has apparently been created in regard to the programme of the Opotiki Jockey Club. According to an official state.ment by tbe president, the club has 'every intention of conducting a meeting this year on the usual date.

Fire Board Vacancy The Hon. J. ' B. Gow has been appointed Government representative on the Opotiki- Fire Board to fill the vacancy created by the recent death of the late Mr. H. R. Hogg. "Mine's a Beer" A car owner in Opotiki was recently telling a friend of a new and most useful accessory which he had just acquired. It toolc the form of a scribbling pad in a neat frame which was securely clamped to the steering wheel. "Here it is," he said, opening j the door, and as he said, there it was, but some opportunist bad left a message. The message read "Mine's a beer." Land Settlemient In conversation with a "Post" repre

sentative recently, a local farmer expressed his appreciation of the fact that the paper had recently taken the Government to task over its refusal (apparently without consideration) of a large block of land for closer settlement near Opotiki. This man is a practical farmer with a growing family and is at present managing to , make more or less of a living by dairying on som'e rented land near the township. He has not grt enough ground to make a thoroug^ business of it and is exceedingly anxious to get out on a good farm. He stated that he knew the ground in question, and if the Government would take it in hand and sub-divide and fence it in the usual way he would be only too pleased to take up a hundred acres of it and stock it himself as he had enough capital to do this. He stated that the land he vacated near the township would do admirably for the Government's 10-acre scheme. Gardening Circle The gardening circle of the Opotiki Women' s Institute, on Friday afternoon, inspected the garden plots of Mr. and Mrs. Sydenham, of Waioeka Road. The visitors were particularly impressed at tbe splendid display in the hothouses, while the -wonderful vegetables proved the success of the variety of spring flowers and early cultivation methods employed. During afternoon tea, which was seiwed in the garden, Mr. Sydenham briefiy explained some of these methods, and before the visitors departed a very hearty vote of thanks was accorded Mr. and Mrs. Sydenham by the members of the circle.
