LARGE BLOCK GUTTED IN SPECTACULAR BLAZE

Timaru, Monday. Early this morning a spectacular blaze occurred in Sophia Street, when the back portion of the hlock known as Radcliffes was practically gutted. When the brigade arrived the flames had already made considerable progress, and it was found impossible to save portion of the building. The brigade concentrated its efforts on endeavours to save the front portion. The Timaru Wreclcing Company's premises and portion of the building occupied by Toch H were seriously damaged, the chapel being gutted and the furniture destroyed.
