CARTERTON PROTEST

NEW RULES OPPOSED Carterton, Monday. A meeting of the Carterton branch of Wellington R'slief Workers was held on Saturday, when it was decided that no man should go to work to-day, as a protest against the new conditions of relief work. It was stated that in the first week of the new conditions the days of employment had been cut down. Instead of five days, there are only four and three-quarters at 10s a day. This cut would seriously affect the already restricted relief earnings. The local branches wish it to be clearly understood that this move is not a strike, but a course adopted with a view to meeting in conference representatives from the Wairarapa, South County Council, and the Carterton Tradesmen's Association, in an earnest endeavour to seeure better working conditions.
