GENERAL HERTZOG SAYS UNION WILL NOT GO OFF GOLD Capetown, Sept. 15. General Hertzog, Prime Minister, speaking at the Nationalist Congress, j reiterated that the depression has | touched bottom, and predicted that ' Africa will lead the world in the re- ! turn to prosperity. ! He emphasised that there woirid be J no leaving the gold standard or de- | valuation whilo the Nationalists were | in power. The imports for eight months, he ! said, decreased by £15,000,000, and the exports by £4,000,000 compared with the same period of 1931. The Government must i-aise a loan in London to meet back advances and other committments overseas. General revenue and railways indicate that each will fall short of the estimate by £2,000,000.
