VOLKNER PARK
new name for rust island approved by council The competition among the school children for the naming of the island reserve now known as Rust Island or Rat Island brought a much greater number of entries than was anticipated. The name finally cliosen was Volkner Parlc. As there were six competitors who had suggested this name it was decided to divide the prizo money of 18s among them. Another suggestion, which was taken in good part by the town clerk, was "Fleming's Folly." A few of the otl/ers were "Do-Drop-In Park," "Waterfront Park," "Coney Island," "The Laundry Park," "The Rats' Nest," "Ozone Park," while some that wero looked on favourably were "Remembrance Park," "Memoi'ial Park," "Waitara Park" (being a combination of the Waioeka and Otara, the two rivers joining the island), "Sea View Park."
