WHEAT GROWING
ASSOCI ATION REPLIES TO AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE Christchurch, Wednesday. Tho New Zc-aland Wbeat Growers' [ Co-operative .A^ssociation -ha? issued a statement to all members of Parliament in reply to a circular from j the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, reouestirg the appointment of a commission to advise the. Government in regard to wheat dutles. The statement is as follows: The form of this request for an inquiry, suggests that its purpose is not to find out facts, but to facilitate depriving wheat growers of their preI sent protection. Wheat growers have no objection to the fullest inquiries being made and the fullest informa-
tion being obtained in regard to their industry for the guidance of the eountry's policy, but wc suggest that that information is already available in the report of the wheat industry, and the request for repeated inquiry suggeffs that the policy of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce is to retry an allege.d criminal until somebody is found to bring him in guilty. The statement goes on to mention that 7000 farmers are engaged in the industry and that more than 20,000 workers obtain from wheat production, an important part of their yearly income. Replying to the statement that the wheat growers had made no contribution to taxes, it is pointed out that when the present method of protection was introduced in 1927, wheat growers were given 6/- per bushel, but now they receive 4/4.
