RUGBY UNION

APPRECIATION EXPRESSED OF GOOD WORK BY OFFICIALS At the usual weekly meeting of the Opotiki Rugby sub-Union, Messrs. W. Burrett (chairman), E. Webb, G. Shalfoon, C. Morris, S. Jephson and J. Edwards were present. Mr. G. Shalfoon, in opening the business, paid a tribute to the work done by Mr. W. Burrett the chair-man-selector-coach. He considered that the success of the team was due in no small part to his enthusiasm and able coaching. His enthusiasm had infected the players and his coaching had shown them how to make the most use of that enthusiasm. He also congratulated the other selectors. Mr. C. Morris for the City Club, and Mr. F. J, Short for the Country

Clubs, endorsed Mr. Shalfoon's remarks and thought they should include the secretary who had worked extremely hard in the interests of the game. Mr. S. Jephson, after endorsing Mr. Short's remarks, suggested that the union should record its appreciation in some permanent form, such as a photograph of the team. Mr. Burrett, replying on belialf of himself and his co-selectors, said that they were fully repaid by the splendid spirit and enthusiasm shown by the team and members of the union. Mr. Short said that he would very much like to have a chance of passing these statements on to the team, as they had played in a most sportsmanlike and enthusiastic manner. The secretary, Mr. Simmonds, recalled the fact that the union had been given most enthusiastic support by many members of the general public. Mr.— Short remarked that he thoroughly agreed with Mr. Jephsoa's suggestion that a photo of the team should be taken. Following a discussion as to where an enlarged photograph of the team could be placed, Mr. Burrett said that this brought up a matter he had long had in mind, namely that all the sports bodies should combine in obtaining a room for holding meetings, etc. He suggested that all trophies could be lcept in this room. Mr. Short suggested that it might be possible to get a room in the Mcchanic's Institute, and if so, he considered this would be very suitable as the public could have. access to it. It was decided that Mr. Short should ascertain if it would be possible to secure a room in the institute building. The following is the junior rep. team to play for the Shalfoon Shield on Saturday: — W. Aidney, T. Walker, T. Mihaere, Connor, D. Bennett, J. Hata, -Hunia .Ross, G. Williams, J. Hudson, M. Tahi, Tahaia, P. Brown, Timoti, Shadow, Pirihi, G. Thompson, Gee, Paul (junior).
