CHEESE IN WAXED CARTONS
EXPERIMENT TO BE TRIED OUT. The packing of cheese in sealed tins for experimental purposes has been earried out by the Stratford Dairy Company, and a consignment dispatch-ed to London last season turned out very satisfactorily. The eost of the tin containers, however, made this form of packing anything but an economic proposition, so that further inquiries were made with the result that tbe British Trade Commissioner, Mr. Paish', secured some special sheet cardboard from the Old Country and this was used in the form of cartons. These were not a success, as they were neither watertight nor airtight. An endeavour is now being made to procure sheets of waxed hoavd, similar to that used in honey and ice cream containers, but so far without success, as there are none available o£ the required size. Altliough inquiries have been made at Home and in Germany, there is at present no firm manufacturing the slieets ncedcd. It is held that cheese in sucli waxed cartons would turn out moist and fresh, much more suitable to the trade at Home. This form of paclcage would be cheap, light and much more attractivc and convenient than the tin containers.
