Kept Police Awake A first offending Maori inebriate who kept the police awake by his obstreperous conduct, was fined 10s ahd costs in th.e Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. Aeroplane Busy The Rotorua Airways' 'plane has been in considerable demand recently and a number of visitors have undertaken flights over the town and district, On Sunday, the eompany's pilot, Squadron-Leader A. J. Butler, made a non-stop flight to Taupo and back, the beautiful weather provlng ideal for the purposes of sightseeing. Tangi at Ohihemut'u A Maori tangi is at present in progress at Ohinemutu owing to. the deaths yesterday, of Akipita Rangatahi and Mrs. R. Ke.reopa. The firstnamed was a returned soldier and the latter a member of the Taniwha hockey club and a sister-in-law to Guide Rangi, of Whakarewarewa. Farmers Want Rain It is very obvious at the present time that rain is needed throughout the Auckland province. This is probably the driest spring known in Rotorua for many years, in fact an old resident claims that not for 50 years has he known there to be so little rain. Case Withdrawn The police in the Rotorua Court yesterday asked leave to withdraw the case against Hori Mau of abetting J. S. Maskery in running a bookmaking business. In this case the charge was adjourned on Mau's electing to be tried by jury. Access Into Rotorua In order to provide better access in Rotorua, the lower portion of Ranolf Street from Arawa Street to Ohinemutu is at present being widened by the Rotorua Borough Council. For some time past this portion of the main road has been found too narrow owing to the increasing volume of trafiic it has carried, but when the present work is completed and the roadway regraded the difficulty will he averted. Rotorua Chemist's Work It was revealed by Mr. A. E. Jull, M.P., at yesterday's Rotorua Rotary Club's luncheon, that the soil from the Napier inner harbour which was raised seven feet by earthquake, was being analysed by a Rotorua Government chemist with a view to ascertaining the best method of treatment to render it fit for farming. Revision of Boundaries A meeting of the Waikato Rngby Union has been called for Friday, September 30 to consider adjustnient of the boundaries under its control, and pai'ticularly an applieation by the Putaruru sub-union for a revision of its boundaries and that of the Matamata sub-union. The Rotorua subunion decided last night. to support the Putaruru applieation. A Broad Comparison "As a matter of fact your list is as hefty as yourself, isn't it?" said Senior Sergeant Carroll to a burly bushman who was convicted of assault in the Rotorua Court yesterday. Official Dinner to Visitors At the, conclusion of the women's hockey match between Kerepeehi and Rotorua on Saturday, the visitors were tendered a dinner by tbe Rotorua Women's Hockey Association in the Dolly Varden Tearooms. On behalf of the visitors, Mr. Redwood extended the thanks of the Kerepeehi team for the opportunity provided to visit Rotorua and commented upon the sportsmanlike play of the Rotorua team, while Mr. C. J. Gasey, on behalf of the Rotorua Association officially welcomed the team and hoped that next year a return game would be played at Kerepeehi. Seekiiig Permanent Grounds Last night when appointing the president, Mr. T. S. Robertson, as the Rotorua Rugby sub-Union delegate to the Advance Rotorua League, it was suggested that the proposed body should be asked to press for the early completion of the playing fields on the Kuirau Reserve, and it *was mentioned that the New Zealand Rugby Union was interested in securing a lengthy tenure of the ground. A Neat Definition The phrase "Black and Tans" which was the subject of some comment in a court case in Rotorua, seemed to stump witnesses when they were asked what it meant. However the neatest definition was made by a member of the legal profession who defined a "Black and Tan" as the same to an Irishman as a special constable is to a New Zealand rioter.
