BIG POSSIBILITIES MANUFACTURE OF ARTIFICIAL SILK FROM N.Z. FLAX AN AUCKLAND DISCOVERY

Auckland, Tuesday. A development in the flax industry which will in all probability be of imme.nse importance to the Dominion is an'nounced. Exhaustive laboratory tests over a long period have shown that it is possible to produce cellaphone paper (a wrapping of the type found on many ehocolate and in cigarettes and tohacco packages) and artificial silk from Phormium tenax, or New Zealand flax. It is understood that as soon as negotiations are concluded a factory will be established at Mercer. Tho possibilities ahead of the new proposal are unlimited, not only for tho local marlcet, but for export, and it may well save the flax industry I from ruin and turn it into one of the I Dominion's most important activities. Already it is said that one of the largest firms of tobacco manufacturers has made enquiries with a view to entering into a contract for cellaphone. paper.
