Dunedin, Tuesday. Tho statement made by the Minister of Education at Auckland regarding the school text books contract v/as considered by the executive of the South Island Fede.ration of School Committees, which states that objections are not confined to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, protests having been made by the South Island Conference at Otago, while further protests are being sent by South Canterbury and Southland. It is pointed out that to a recent Auckland questionnaire, 67 replies dubbed the text books unsatisfactory, only one reply endorsing them. In view of the National Expediture Commission's recommendation of a 25 per cent. reduction and the renewal of the contract for three years, why has the Minister obtained onliy a 22£ per cent reduction and an extended contract for one year longer than recommended. It has been publicly stated that the retail prices could be reduced 33 1-3 per cent., allowing a 25 per cent. trade discount to boolcsellers, whereas the Minister's arrangement with tho present publishers, who hafl all the books in type, was a reduction of only 22 £ per cent., and a 15 per cent. trade discount.
