JUDGE NOTES INCREASING LAWLESSNESS AMONG NATIVES -

Auckland, Monday. The prevalence of crime among the Maoris, particularly in North \uckland, was the subject of comnent by His Honour Mr. Justice llerdman, when sentencing several -lisoners to-day. His Honour said that there had been an exceptionally large number of cases from the Hokianga district, where lawlessness among young natives had caused the police much ;oncern. Kaari Smith (39) was sentenced fo two years' reformative detention, and obert Harris (23) to 12 months' for breaking and entering a post oflice md stealing property worth £123. It was stated that the post office ;afe had been removed to a motorear and driven 40 miles, and a number of Maoris opened it with explos•ve. The Judge said he thought he had mposed deterrent sentences in cases from Hokianga, but unfortunately it appeared that they had not had the desired effect.
