MINSSTER'S REPLY DEPUTATION OF PROTEST ' FROM AUCKLAND ASSN. "A BUSINESS ABRAN GEMENT"

Auckland, Monday. Hon. R. Masters, replying to a school committee's deputation v/hich protested against the extension of the school text hook contract, said the objections wc-re confined to Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch; j that= a reduction in price had been j brought about through the negotiations undertaken by hina; that not a complaint had been received by the department of deterioration in the quality of the books; that there was nothing unusual in having the same set of text-books for eight or ten years; that there was no country in the world where the Department of Education held the copyright of. their text-books; that the National
Expenditure Commission rocomniended a 25 per cent. reduction in the price and the. extension of the contract for three years; and that the new arrangement was a sound business one, advantageous to public and parents.
