CHANGE THE OIL
NECESSARY ATTENTION. Frequent draining of the sump and replenishment with new oil is, undoubtedly, one of the most important factors ensuring prolonged freedom from cylinder wear and bearing trouble. It may appear cheapest to make up the level with pints or quarts _ of oil every. few days, but after seve- " ral thousand miles the oil becomes so dirty and diluted that the small quantities added are quickly contaminated, and one doss not gain the full benefit therefrom. Follow the maker's instructions and drain the sump every 1200-2000 miles, depending upon the size of the engine, the sump capacity, and so on. For a small engine it is advisable to do it every' 1200-1500 miies and not allow it to go any longer. It will be found most economical in the long run, and many enthusiastie owners who make this a golden rule have found that after a big milaage, say, 15,000-16,000 miles, there is no great increase in oil eonsumption. Make sure that all the sludge is removed by having the sump flushed out if the worlc is done for you at a service depot, or, if you do it yourself use one of the special flushing oils. Any sludge left will contaminate the new oil. Make sure, too, that the drain plug is tightened up thoroughly before you put in the new lubricant.
