Owing to the crushing duty 78 Scottish potmalt distillers have agreed to make no whisky during the coming season, while 13 distillers outside the combine will work only sliort time, causing 1000 unemployed. The warehouses are full, but the duty of 72/6 on each gallon of whisky, costing 3/6 to produce, has caused such a slump in saies as to make the closing of the distilleries unavoidable.
