LOCAL AND GENERAL

Prominent Visitor The Rev. David Calder, B.A., New Zealand secretary of the British and Foreign Bible Society, visited Opotiki over the week-end and was the guest of the Hon. J. B. Gow. During his visit the Rev. Calder conducted services at the various churches and on Sunday (yesterday) afternoon held a special young people's combined service in the Salvation Army Ilall. Relief Workers Restive There has been a good deal of feeling among the local unemployed over the change in the system of relief work. Instead of working three weeks and standing down in the f ourth, arrangements have been made for the men to work every week. The amount of remuneration remains about the same, but the time of work is spread over four weeks instead of three. There is a rumour current that the local unemployed relief workers are proposing to go on strike in a body unless the Local Unemployment Committee allows them to return to the system of working three weeks and standing down one. There is evidence that this rumour is correct, but whether the strike has actually been decided upon and if so when it will be called is not generally known. Scoutmaster Fareweiled The First Opotiki Scout Troop held a special parade on Friday evening to farewell the scoutmaster, Mr. S. Baker. The District S.M., Mr. N. F. Benham, made a- short speech in which he spoke of the very valuable work done by Mr. Baker. The loss of Mr. Baker is a great blow to the scout movement in Opotiki, but it is hoped that it will not be long before someone is found who will carry on this service to the community in general and the boys in particular. After the boys had given three cheers, Mr. Benham, the district scoutmaster, presented the St. Stephen's interpatrol cup (presented by the late Mr. H. R. Hogg) to the Eagle Patrol who will hold it for the ensuing six months. Mr. W. H. Taylor was invested as acting rover scout leader by the district S.M., and the evening was concluded with signailing practice and a talk on radio by the district scoutmaster. Teachers Appointed Mr. G. W. Ormandy has been appointed assistant in the secondary 'department in the Opotiki District High School in the place of Miss Harding (resigned). Mr.. Ormandy will not take up duties until October I. Mr. J. W. Allen, B.A., will relieve pending Mr. Ormandy's arrival. Mr. M. Lowe has been appointed relieving teacher in the place of Miss N. Anderson and Miss B. E. Penny in the place of Miss A. Cave.
