-By Telegraph — Copyright )

Auckland, Saturday. A raid on a large scale was carried out by thieves at Penrose lastnight, when almost the entire stoek of meat and small goods in Frederick Birdling's butchery at Station Road was stolen. Mi*. Birdling- remained at his shop until ten o'clock last evening cutting up his meat, arranging his orders for to-day, and also a display of his goods. for the window. When he reaehed his shop this morning he was astounded to discover that the front door had been smashed and that practically all his stoclc of meat had been stolen. A pig, a sheep, 1001b of beef cut up into joints, 501b of steak, 301b of veal, 201b of sausages, 141b of cgoked ham, several dishes of brawn, and several dozen pies were missing. The thieves used a large jemmy on. the front door. Mr. Birdling is a heavy loser because of the raid on his shop, while his business was seriously dislocated this morning through his inability to supply his customers. No one appears to have noticed the thieves at work, the shop being rather isolated. So much meat was stolen that a rnotor vehicle or cart must have been used to cax-ry away the stolen meat.
