Rec. ept. 2, 1- a.m. Shanghai, Sept. 1. The Mayor, Mr. Wu Teuchen in response to the Japanese naval commander's protest, yesterday proclaimed his intention to suppress all antiJapanese lawlessness and curb rum-our-mongers to the fullest extent. He urged the Chinese community to remain cairn- Nevertheless the exodus of Chinese from Chapei and the surrounding district continues for some j unaccountable cause, which is largely I attributed to the movements of the ; Japanese patrol and the armoured cars which are nightly in the vicinityon the old battle ground. The National Government has issued orders to all provineiaL authorities strictly to observe September 18 as "National Humiliation Day," it being the annivei'sary of the Japanese oceupation of Mukden.
