HORSES STARVED TO DEATH

Invercargill, Wednesday. In the Magistrate's Court to-day Charles Arnold and William Robert Braithwaite, farmers of Otapiri, appeared on charges of cruelty to animals, and that horses ov/ned by tham were insufficiently fed. Arnold was also charged similarly in respect to his two dogs. The secretary of the S.P.C.A. said that a visit to Braithwaifce's farm revealed that seven horses met their deaths during a period of a month. Evidence could be produced to the effect that their deaths wer5 due to starvation. The Magistrate convicied both defendants and placed them on probation for 12 months, criticising their mental attitude as horrible and dreadful, and one of caSlous indifference to animals.
