CHARGED WITH MAKING FALSE MARRIAGE • DECLARATION

Christchurch, Tuesday. Before the Magistrate, Mr. : T." H. Lowry, to-day, Bernard Walter Wiliiams (21), of Dunedin, was charged with making a false statement under „he Marriage Act 011 May 27, at Waimate. He pleaded guilty and was committed for sentence to the Supreme Court. The police said that accused had filled in a marriage forni describing .limself as Sir Earl Bernard Earland, a Bai'onet of Nottingham, and-subse-quently under that title he married a girl in Sydenham. The girl knew him xnder his correct name, but all ' the /.•articulars he supplied to the registrar were false. His actions, however, were more foolish than -anything alse. The girl had not been misled into marrying him. ' The police said Williams was the son of a storeman at Dunedin, and had never been out of New 'Zealand in his • life. For some time he worked in the post office as a messenger. Th'en he went farming and lately had been emnloyed by the Seventh Day Adventists worldng on a commission basis sell"isg bibles and other Christian litsrai:ure. He could not explain why he posed as a haronet. He had gained nothing by it. He had been keeping comoany with the Sydenham girl for some /ears, and he was now living with h'er parents. - Bail was allowed.
