STRIKING THE RATES
SPECIAL MEETING OF BOROUG COUNCIL HELD •YESTERDAY ' A special meeting 'of the /Kotori Borough Council was held yesterd'; morning for the purpose of strikii rates for the coming year. Thei were present, His Worship the Ma or,~Mr. T. Jackson, Grs: E. T. Johi son, N. M. Keane, A. Smith, W. I Wackrow. Apologies for absenc were received from Crs. G. Urquhai and L. J. Bayfeild. The consolidated rate ■which ii cludes the general. hospital, librar: and special interest rate, was ihe at the same level as last year. Th fire prevention rate was fixed s 7-1000th of a p-enny more than the rat ruling last year. The special intei est rate for the sewerage loan wi be l-10th penny less. Fees for refus and nightsoil removal were not altei ed, and the publicity and amusemer rate was also struck at last year figure. All rates are due and payable o September 2. Cr. Johnson asked whether it woul not be possible to extend the five pc cent. rebate period of thirty day but the Mayor pointed out that ti council was bound in this matter b statute. The imposition of the t( per cent. penalty for non-payment i the specified period, however, w] left to the discretion of the counci It was also suggested that in orde to assist ratepayers, arrangemeni might be made for the payment c rates by instalment. The Mayor sta ed that the council already had e: tended this f acility, but made plain that ratepayers were only ei titled tq.„the five per cent. rebate c the proportion of rates paid witbi the thirty-day period.
