(Special from
Auckland, Saturday. The track was in good order and the racing, with the exception of the second trotters' race, was also good at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting. The attendance was very satisfactory and the weather fine. The August Handicap went to Mrs. H. W. Burch's Prince Pedro, and the Massey Memorial to Little Guy. Pegaway duly landed the double. The tots was brisk, handlirvg ',-£21,614 against £21,565 10/- last year a drop of only £401 10/-. INTRODUCTORY HANDICAP, (for trotters) of £100. Limit 3.45. The Two Mokos Peter Moko received a good advertisement as a sire of trotters when two of his progeny, Moko Balls and Moko Girl came in in the Introductory Handicap. It was Jimmy Paul's re-introduction to the reins after his illness, and the win was popular. Win Huon made the early pace from "Gold Realm, Te Ngutu, and Moko Bells, but with six furlongs covered, Moko Bells and Moko Girl made a forward move, Win Huon going to a break when tackled. The two Mokos raced neck and neck up the back but Moko Girl went to a break and Moko Bells was not troubled to win by three lengths with Win Huon in third berth four lengths back. Mattie Herbilwyn was fourth, followed by Gold Realm and Windchat who should do better. MOUNT EDEN HANDICAP, of £100. One mile and a-quarter. Wee Machine Paces at Last Frequent disappointments had made the public a bit shy of Wee Machine, but be took it into his head to go otf and after lying in well behinci the leaders came away fast to top oft Stormy Mac by a head. Stormy Mac was disappointed in an opening, or he would have won. With a burst of speed, Don Juan made up his handicap in the first furlong- and led Pedlar, Mountain Sun and Worthy Chiff, for the first circuit. There was not much alteration on the back stretch, but Pedlar moved up to turn for home with. Don Juan and Mountain Sun (a complete novice) lying next. Wee Machine and Stormy Mac put in the licks to win with Fisher third and Mountain Sun fourth. Betterwin, Our Summer, and Don Juan followed. Mountain Sun is one to watch. AUGUST HANDICAP, of £200. Times: 4.36 2-5, 4.29 3-5, 4.36 4-5, and 4.34 1-5. Headily driven by McMillan, Mrs. Burch's Prince Pedro added to his Thames and Cambridge C'up wins to defeat Peter Pirate and Carnui by necks in the August. It was a triumph of driving, for at the distance it looked as if the Prince was snowed in. Carnui made the early running, the pace being very slow and the first half mile taking 1.19. This allowed Peter Pirate to make up his handicap, so much so that he ran up to third berth. The order past the stand was: Carnui, Prince Pedro, Peter Pirate, Anon, Dan Direct, Real Girl, and Kewpie's Triumph. When the straight was reached, Peter Pirate and Carnui were fighting it out with Prince Pedro hemmed in. He waited till they .tired and pulled round to win nicely. The win was very popular. GREY LYNN HANDICAP, of £100. One mile and a half. Limit 3.36. 1— PEGAWAY, b g, 4yrs, by Worthy Bond — Lottie Aubudon (Mr. A. Cook), 24yds— E. N. Kennerley 1 4— REALTY, b g, aged (Mr. M. Pegaway Not Troubled Pegaway was not troubled to win the Grey Lynn, going away from the rest when the business end was reached. He was a hot favourite and improved 8 seconds on his handicap. The second horse, Realty, did 7 1-5 secs. better and the third, Homeward, 8secs better, showing that the pace was on. Margaret Wallace was first away, but after a round had gone, Pegaway and Homeward cleared out from the field followed by Margaret Wallace, Cleao, Whakahihi, Jersey Thorpe and Realty. The last-named put in a terrific run to beat Homeward for second, with Jersey Thorpe (fourth), Whakahihi, Cleao, and Margaret Wallace. ROYAL OAK HANDICAP (for trotters), of £110. One mile and a-half. Limit, 3.38. 2— MOKO GIRL, b m, aged, by Peter Moko— The Limit (Mr. T. H. Dye), limit— W. T. Dye 1 i— CARL MACK, b g, aged Messrs Stonemont Bros), 48yds I. R. Morrison 2 1 — PARRISH BELLE, b m, 6yrs (Mr. A. G. Pillinger), 24yds — Owner 3 Also started: 5 Marble Star, limit; 3 Windchat, 72yds; 6 Explosion, 96yds. Won by three lengths, third horse a length further back. Marble Star was fourth. Times: 3.41 2-5; 3.39 2-5, 3.42 and 3.44 3-5. Action Needed One of the most barefaced decisions seen at Epsom for years was when no action was taken when Carl Mack galloped for at least fifty yards to finish second to Moko Girl in the Royal Oak. The case was so glaring that it leaves the whole procedure of the race open to grave suspicion. Marble Star made the pace from Parrish Belle, Carl Mack, Moko Girl (breaking), and Windchat. Moko Girl came up to turn into the straight and win by three lengths. The time was extraordinary. The limit was 3.38, Moko Girl had gone 3.34 for a second in the first race, and she went 3.41 2-5 to win in a better class. The whole race simply reeked, and if that is the type of fare to be served up by the Auckland Trotting Club the sport will soon languish. The club did have an inquiry but the result was the showing of the white flag. ONEHUNGA HANDICAP, of £100. One mile and a-half. Limit 3.40. 1— GUID HAIRST, b g," 4 yrs, by The Triumph — Harvest Home (Mr. G. Cressey), 12yds — F. J. Smith 1 2 — BETTERWIN, gr g, 5yrs (Misses M. and N. Edwards), limit — T. Guiid Hairst Comes Home It was harvest home all right when Guid Hairst got up at the last stride to beat Betterwin in the Onehunga with Pedlar third and Fisher fourth. The race was robbed of a lot of interest when Wee Machine who was go.ng very well was interfered with and almost fell. Don Juan, who stopped to kick, soon struck a gait and went to ,ne 1 ;ad followed by Betterwin, Pedar, Wee Machine, and Guid Hairst. hey finished as indicated. Stormy „uac was fifth and Wee Machine sixth. Renovo at first refused to strike his straps, but when he did go, fairly flew. MASSEY MEMORIAL HANDICAP, of £120. One mile and a-quarter. Master Huia and Dad's Hope were the pacemakers, and were followed by Little Guy, Direct Morning, Real Girl and Kewpie's Triumph. When the pressure was applied, Little Guy came through to win by two lengths from Direct Morning with Real Girl close up, third. Dad's Hope was fourth, followed by Peter Pirate, Master Huia and Oliver Thorpe. ORAKEI HANDICAP, of £110. One mile and a-quarter. Jersey Thorpe made most of the pace from Nathaniel and Pegaway, with Cleao heading the rest. Pegaway asserted his claims at the straight en- I trance, and won pulling up by two lengths from Cleao, who worried Na- 1 thaniel out of second money. Jersey Thorpe was .fourth with the rest beaten off.
