First Round The Thermal Cup final went one ; hole further than the championship, L. F. Murray, of Titirangi, beating G. Napier, of Whakatane, on the , 14th, five and four to play. j At the end of the first 18 holes. ; Murray had a lead of three up on ; Napier in the Thermal Cup. Napier : won the Vista, five and six, but Mur- \ 7 7 ; ray came to light in the next three ! winning by 4 — 5, 3 — 4, 5 — 7. Napier won the Crossing and the Drop was halved in fours, Murray winning , Westward Ho, 5 — 6. ! Napier took the Summit 4 — 5, and ' Muri-ay the Chasms 3 — 4. Murray ! turned for home, two up. 1 On the home stretch, Murray won the first hole off hand 5 — 7, the next was halved, and Murray took j Taupo Road, 4 — 5. Three halves : followed, Napier winning the next two. Murray took the 18th and endi ed the first round, three up. The Vista, after dinner, was halv- ! ed in fours, Murray taking the Play- ! g-round, 4 — 5. They both holed out | in four at Majuba, Murray taking l the Road, 4 — 5. Napier took the Crossing, 5 — 5, and the Drop was halved. At Westward Ho, Murray got a bogey five to Napier's six, Napier retaliating with a 4 — 5 win at i the Summit. The Chasms was halvi ed in fours. Murray retained his ' lead when he won the Tipperary in six, Napier taking seven. The Sentinels was halved in fives and Napier won Taupo Road in four to six. The Elbow was halved in fives, but the end came at the Inlet, where Murray sunk his ball for a four to Napier's five. This left the match, Murray five up and four t.o play.
