THE CHAMPIONSHIP First Round The Vista: — Tallis. won the toss and drove off, his first shot being well up, and his second on the edge of the green. Fryer went more to the right, landing his second in the righthand bunker. However, he made a good recovery and was about ten feet off the pin. Tallis took two putts, Fryer faillng to negotiate a stymie. Tallis' hole in 4. The Playground: — Again Tallis was well up with his drive, Fryer skcing to get behind the bunker right in the No. 1 fairway. He was short with his second, Tallis getting within ten feet of the pin. Fryer chipped over the green into the bunker at the other side and picked up, Tallis holing out in four. Tallis, two up. Majuba: — Fryer again sliced his tee shot, Tallis finding the edge of the green. Fryer's recovery was good' and he was just short with his putt, Tallis winning the hole in bogey three*. The Road: — It was Tallis' turn to slice, and he went close to the fence, whereas Fryer sent down a beauty. Fryer sunk his second putt after a perfect approach. Fryer, two down. ! Taupo Road: — Fryer duffed his \ drive at Taupo Road, and went into ; the rough at the left-hand side, but ' Tallis sent up a nice lengthy straight one. Two fine shots by Fryer saw him within striking distance, but Tallis landed his second on the edge of the green and was down in four. Tallis, three up. The Elbow: — Both got well away at the Elbow. Fryer getting a bit more length. Tallis's second was a perfect approach, but he took two putts to sink. He was luclcy, for Fryer over-ran the hole with his first putt, and lipped it with his second. Tallis, four up. The Inlet: — A bogey three to Fryer, saw him take the Inlet, Tallis taking three putts. The Crater — They halved the Crater in threes, the play of neither calling for much comment. The Lake: — Tallis won the Lake by superior putting. He was on the green in two, Fryer over-running it. Both missed twenty yard putts, Tallis doing better with the next. Ariki: — Both were too far to the right at Ariki, but Tallis kept out of trouble whiist Fryer got into the right-hand bunker. However, Tallis missed a simple putt, and Fryer sunk his, halving in fours. Home: — Good woods saw both in handy positions at Home, and the two approaches had nothing between them. The Second Round The fihals were decided in the' second round at the thirteenth, The Elbow, where Tallis had increased his lead to six with five to play. The Road: — A fine four to Tallis sent his stock still higher at the Road where Fryer played a fine chip only to trickle into the bunker at the baclc of the green.
