A neat stymie robbed him of the win, the hole being halved in 6. Fryer, 2 up. Splendid driving at the Crossing, put the players in command of the green, but f ryer pulled his iron into tlm right guardmg bunker nnd his cpponent was short. Fryer's chip out was j.'vHteet, but he misseil an easy putt, the hole being halved in bogey 5. At the short 6-h, Fryer sunlr a two to Wiliiams' three. Fryer, 3 up. The 7th was halved in uneventful 5's. At the Slh, a iine putt by Frj er gave him the hole in 4, his opponent i'ailing to conneet. Wiliiams missed a great opportunity at the 13th, taking three putts, Fryer over-hitting his second from a difficult lie in the rough. Game aii square. The 14th was halved in 3's. Tallis Defcats Goss Play in the Tallis -Goss semi-tinal was i'ollowed by a large gallery, particularlv when the game was carried to the 19th. At the first tee, both got their drives away, and seconds saw them on the green, both sinking for birdie, tliree. The Playground was halved also in 4's and at Majuba, Tallis scorcd another birdlo l hree, Goss doing it in bogey. It was exhileraling golf. Tallis slipped badly at the Road getting bunkered, but holed out in six, Goss again being down in bogey. Another six to Tallis at the Crossing, saw him one down, Goss keeping level with the Colonel in five. The Drop saw both On the spot with threes, the hole being halved. A four to Goss at the Westward Ho gave him two ahead, his opponent sinking in five and Goss was again one up on bogey. At the Summit, Tallis picked up a bit of leeway doing it in bogey, Goss needing a five Goss won the ninth in bog^y, and finished at the turn with one up anc'-j a score of 37 to Tallis's 38. Both struck trouble at the tenth whcre Tallis won with a Six, Goss taking 7. Tallis drew ah-sad at the Sentinel with a birdie to Goss's bogey 5. Th3 next was halved in fours, and Tallis took the next with bogey 4 to Goss's 5. The Inlet saw a sensational "eagle" by Goss who holed his second, Tallis taking two putts The Crater was halved in threes and Goss won the Lake with four to Tallis's 5-. Tallis got Ariki in three, to Goss's 4, and they were all square with a hole to go. Tallis found the green with his second, Goss j going into the left-hand bunker. Tallis | took three putts, Goss geting up to j halve after negotiating a stymie. Goss ■ sent away a lovely drive at the nine- . teenth, Tallis having to drop out from a slice, Botji found the bunkers with ,
the next, Goss hopping from the first to the second on the left. Tallis was well up, but missed an easy putt, Goss, however, putted worse. Tallis sunk and won, one up.
