Wednesday morning: Bogey handicap, M. D. Carr, 4 up. * * * Many of the finishes in yesterday's championship matches were very close as the scores indicate. Three in succession were carried on to the 19th, and in others only a putt divided the piayers. According to a prominent member of the club, play was the keenest seen in a tournament here for many years. * * * There are no Rotorua piayers left in the third round of the championshie, Copeland Smith and the Carr brothers being eliminated by Tallis, Fryer and Lusk. . However, they each put up a good fight, the matches all going to the 19th. S. E. Carr was particularly unfortunate, striking Lusk in wonderful form. The Auckland player sunk his ball for a pe.fect three at the 19th. * * * Two holes to the bad at the 16th, a fine recovery was made by Copeland Smith in his match with Tallis. Ile managed to equalise on the 18th gic.cn only to lose the match in the 19th by a putt. * * * The conditions yesterday were far better than on the opening day, a ff.-t which was refieeted in the cards i clumed. Many of the visiting piayers, wi.o seemed to find the first day's wind rather tricky, got better directmn and there was less time spent in the bunlcers. - * * -it Tallis had a stroke of luck at the 1S h in his match witli ,Co]deland Smith. He duffed his drive, but played a perfect second. His third landed in the "pot", but he got out magnificently and landed by the pin

to halve. He won the 19th -and the match. * >5: * A good round was put up during the af iernoon when D. A. Burt, Auckland, finished all square with bogey. This was the best card until "C. II. Murphy eame in with 1 up on the Colonel. * * :H There were quite a few spectators to witness some of the earlier of the championship rounds during the morning, and in the afternoon, these galleries grew in dimensions. It was noticeable that the bulk of the spectators were either women or boys. * * * * The first piayers to go round in the morning found the course a bit tricky owing to the fact that the frost was not yet off the grass. The first two greens presented one or two rather tricky problems.
