RETURNING OFFICERS' OPINION IN CANTERBURY ELECTION CHALLENGE

-By Telegraph — Copyright).

Ashburton, Saturday. The returning officer has been advised by the Crown Law Office in regard to the challenge against Mr. J. Connolly's election as member for Mid-Canterbury, on the ground that his expenses exceeded the legal limit, that it would be inadvisable to take any steps under Section 173 of th'e Act. Mr. Connolly defeated Mr. David Jones at the general election. The point was raised some time ago that Mr. Connolly's election expenses allegedly exceeded the limit fixed by statute and that therefore he was disqualified from holding the seat.
