-By Telegraph — Copyright/.
Montreal, August 20. Unleashing a brilliant sprint in the final 200 yards, Jack Lovelock, the New Zeaalnd Rhodes Scholar, to-day ran the fastest mile ever recorded on ihe dirt track of the. local Amateur Athletic Association. The returning Olympic eompetitors, representing Great Britain, New Zealand and South Africa, were matched against the Montreal track stars, and it was in this meeting that Lovelock ran. Lovelock outran five eompetitors to win in 4.14 1-5 — one fifth of a second behind the Canadian record, set by Thomas (Great Britain), at Hamilton two years ago, and four-fifths of a second under the previous track record by Joie Ray (Unitsd States). The track was slow after recent rains. Lovelock heat Tom Evenson (Great Bi'itain) by 40 yards. Lord Burghley Breaks Record In winning the 440 yards hurdles Lord Burghley, Britain's Olympic team captain, established a new Canadian rscord of 55sec flat, four seconds better than the old record. Lord Burghley discounted the idea that an all-Empire team in future Olympics might make a greater demonstration of stfength against the United States in particular. "I haven't heard of the suggestion," he said. "The idea of th'e Games is to have good, close competition. It doesn't matter so much who wins so long as a fine sporting spirit pre-; vails. We had that at Los Angeles."
