Rec. Aug. 21, 5.5 p.m. New York, August 20. A message from Columbus, Ohio, states that at the opening campaign of the Stats Democratic convention on Saturday for the Presideney, Mr. F. Roosevelt, Governor ~ of New York, launched an attack against the President, Mr. H. Hoover's "administration, and paid particular attention to financial arid banking conditions. He favoured more stringent banking laws. Ha plaeed the blame*- of the 1929 crash on the Republicans, charging them first that they had encouraged speculation and overproduction through false economy - operations, secondly that the administration had
attempted to minimise the crash and misled tha people as to the gravity of the situation. They refused to recognise and combat the evils at home, and charged Mr. Hoover that he dismissed the objection that the higher tariffs retarded foreign trade. He declared that when the facts could no longer be ignored, V/ashington said the failure came from abroad. Mr. Roosevelt asked why had the Republicans with the elephant covered with mire during the last four years, suddenly overnight begun to regard it as a sacred white 'elephant" polluted as it was and whitewashed it in the hope to deceive a credulous electorate for four years more.
