IRREDUCIBLE MINIMUM
Reduced spending on clothing by men alone probably amounted to £1,000,000 in the past year, according to an estimate offered by Mr. Barber at the Wellington Woollen Company's annual meeting. That seems a large sum and yet it repregents only about 40/- per head of the adult male population. Naturally this reduction involves a serious loss of turnover to the clothing trade. Before very long, however, they must experience a revival of business. Many men's wardrobes must be rapid- . y reaching the stage where renewals cannot be postponed. The same applies, no doubt, in other :rades. In fact the depression has been building ifp in its usual way the conditions of a business revival. The signs are that it is . already beginning, and, as confidence grows, its scope and pace will increase. When prosperity does return, it may be hoped we shall use it more sanely and providently than in the past.
