THE UNEMPLOYED

(To the Editor). Sir, — It is difficult to understand why the letter of our genial friend, Mr. Tuclc was headecl "Reply to Mr. Vaile." He does not answer me in any way, but indulges in inaccurate statements and discusses all sorts of extraneous matters in a rather wild way. Mr. Tuck says that small holdings will not be a success. That is purely negative. Let him tell us what will bo successful. Something must be done. At piesent nothing is being done for these unfortunate unemployed folk except pampering them. Our good friend's light-hearted badinage leads us nowhere. I trust he wiii make some serious proposition — superior in every way to those which I have humbly submitted — for the solution of the most serious probiem oi our day — unemployment. Before closing, I would like to put Mr. Tuck right on one or two matters of fact upon which he is misinformed. He says: "The profits of a State bank, if any, would belong to the people, as instance the Auckland Savings Bank." Now the Auckland Savings Bank is not a State bank. It is a private trustee bank. The State savings bank is the Post Office Savings Bank — and can friend Tuck give us any instance of this institution hav~ ing donated £10,000 or £1000 or £1 to any useful public purpose? He says I am the "holder of vast heritages." Quite wrong. I have never inherited one acre or one penny in my life; and I may add that if there is any general desire on the part of the unemployed to go on to the land in general, and my land in particular, there will be no necessity for any "stick up at the pistol's point." I have alreauy offered to donate some and would be quite willing to greatly increase the area and that with a good unencumbered freehold titie. But the subsequent successful estabLshment of a co-operative group setLement upon it would be quite beyond my finances. That must be uncicitaken by Government. — I am, etc. E. EARLE VAILE. "Broadlands," Aug. 18, 1932.
