WITH THE HOUNDS

ROTORUA 8c BAY CLUB PAENGAROA MEET PROVIDES MOST ENJOYABLE SPORT HARES PLENTIFUL A good field of followers enjoyed a successful day with the Rotorua and jay of Plenty hounds at Paengaroa Oxi Vveuncsaay. Hounds cast off on Mr. Vercoe's property and after seaiching for some time the pack split on a braee of hares in a paddock closo to the homestead, one making into cover, the other taking the open country over good grassland, the field following the latter. After a short run thls hare was lost in a cow paddock where scent was fouled. The other half of the pack were more successful., hunting their hare in covcr and eventually registering a kill. The pack was then got together again and a move made to Mr. Matthew's property on the other side of the Rotorua-Paengaroa Road; Here an other hare was quickly found, which went off at a great pace circling through Mr. Matthew's, across .he main road and into Mr. Vercoe's. At the main road hounds were at iault, and after making a cast down the road without success a further cast was made in Mr. Vercoe's paddock,. where they again hit off the line, working it very cleverly but slowly through a herd of cows. Getting into a clear country again hounds hit off the line strongly, running the hare into cover where, after a twisting run, they again killed. A move was again made to Mr. Matthews' property where. another hare was found, which provided the best run of the day. Taking a line through open padclocks', with hounds pressing hard in full cry, this hare eventually crossed the main road on to Mr. Matthews' adjoining fann where it finally doubled, and hounds checked in a turnip paddock. This had been a very fast three-mile run from the start to the first check, and a number of empty saddles were in evidence. Hounds working very kecnly picked up the line again, the hare viewed heading for the main road which he again crossed, hounds overrunning the line in a wattle plantation. After some delay in gathering hounds a back cast was made, which put the pack on the line again, the hare eventually running into dense scrub, hounds following and dislodging three fresh hares on which the pack split. As it was then getting late hounds were whipped off and the field adjourned to Mr. Matthews' homestead where a very enjoyable af„ernoon tea was provided.
