HEAVY RAINS
MAORI WOMEN FIND FLOODS GIVE GOOD SUPPLY OF FIREWOOD During the recenfc heavy rain in the Opotiki district, motorists passing down the Waioeka Valley Road were much amused and not a little astonished to see two Maori women gatliering firewood in a novel rnanner. These two intrepid wahines had waded out into the stream and were catehing the f.oating logs and hauling them ashore. Cold? Not a bit of it. While the avex*age pakeha was going around in overcoat and scai'f, these two were thoroughly ehjoying their batlxe, often wading right up to their necks in the ice cold water. As a result of the l'ecent heavy xains. the Waioeka Valley Road is blocked by a number of slips and the Public Works Department report that it is not likely to be open before Friday. The Motu River is reported to have been in higher flood than at any time since 1918, but no damage is reported.
