REMGVAL OF RESTRICTIONS URGED BY BUSINESS MEN

Auckland, Thursday. The Council of the Chamber of Commerce to-day approved a remit urging the Government to free New Zealand trade at the earliest opporbunity from some of its impediments by (a) a downward revision of the tariff on British and foreign goods; (b) the removal of the duty surtax; (c) the removal of the restrictions and embargoes on the import and export of certain commodities; (d) the eurtaihnent of the powers granted by Orders-in-Council to the Customs and other departments, which result in uneertainty and hinder commence. The council also approved of a remit urging a reduction in trade barriers between Australia and New Zealand, also endeavours to negotiate with other countries on a suitable reciproeal basis. The Chamber of Commerce also decided to suggest to the Prime Minister that the Government should instruct Hon. Downie Stewart, before returning to New Zealand, to visit the United States, with the object of negotiating a trade agreement.
