OTTAWA COMMITTEE FINDS MATSON SERVICE "DUMPING" FURTHER CONSIDERATION

-By Telegraph — Copyright).

Rec. Aug. 18, 7.50 p.m. Ottawa, August 17. At a Sub-committee on the special shipping question, of which Mr. J. G. Coates is chairman^Mr. H. S. Gullett, representing Australia, reported on^ trade between North America, Fiji, New Zealand and Australia, and said damage has been caused to British lines which operated between this service over a long period by incursions into the trade by the Matson line. The position is aggravated by the fact that the the British line is excluded from trade between Honolulu and San Francisco, which is reserved as coastal trade, while f-oreign ships are allowed to share in trade between Australia and New Zealand. The sub-committee considers this American subsidised competition constitutes a dumping service. Nevertheless the application of the recommendations of the 1932 conference might have important repercussions on Empire trade in other directions, which must be fully examined. • The subcommittee therefore, recommends that the question be referred for. fuller examination by the representatives in London of all Governments concerned.
