Gisborne, Wednesday. The Magistrate, Mr. P. H. Harper , to-day held that taxis are exempt from the necessity of obtaining temporary service licenses for race traffic to courses within a reasonable distance of their headquarters. He dismissed an information against a taxi proprietor who ran to the course during the reeent raees, stating that the Transport Act was intended to protect roads from undue traffic on defined service runs and not to apply to the operation of cars operating otherwise than on the -defined route as in the case of taxis.
