— By Telegraph — Copyright).
Rec. Aug. 17, 7.0 ptm. Miadrid, August 16. Don Azana's following is now stronger than ever, but his popular- ; ity will be short-lived if his policy is | not changed. Among the reasons for discontent is the Government's lack of foresight | in the new Catalan dispute, which is ; being passed through' the Cortes, un- j der which its opponents declare that ! the aid given to Catalan industries j will enable them to flood the rest of j Spain with goods, often of inferior i quality, but high in price. Many also fear that the policy of j some of the present Socialist Min- [ isters would welcome a more conser- I vative Government. On the other j hand, the Syndicalists and the extreme Labour element resent the Govern- | ment restriction*. i Observers consider that there is a surprising amount of freedom from j incendiarism and mob violenee. Fin- ' ally Don Azana's government has I aroused the antagonism of the church ; by prohibiting all teaching by monas- ; tic orders at the same time it is forc- I ing religious schools to continue their j worlc, at least until the Government has comp'leted the building of 27,000 | schools to replace them. The revolt has given the Government another ehance.
