M.P. CRITICISES MINISTER FOR EXTENSION OF CONTRACT
— By Telegraph — Copyright).
AUCKLAND, Tuesday. An extension of four years of the unexpired contract for the supply of primary school text-books has been granted by the Government, according to information received by Mr. Stallworthy, M.P., from the Minister of Education, Hon. R. Masters. The Minister said the present contract had still 18 months to run. An extension of four years had been given in return for a 22 per cent. reduction in retail prices. Had times been normal he would have considered the preparation of a new set of books by the Education Department, but to force parents to purchase a new set of books at this time would entail unduly heavy expense. Mr. Stallworthy strongly criticises the Minister's action, saying that the Minister has paid a heavy price fOr an immediate reduction, and with prices falling the arrangement is ' likely to prove very costly to the parents.
