CHARIT1ES BENEFIT - OVER £179,000 DISTRIBUTRD IN LAST NlNETEEN YEARS ANNUAL MEETING OF BOARD

WELLINGTON, Monday. Since tae death of Mr. T. G. Maei arthy in 1912, over £179,000 has. heen ^ distrihutsd hy tae .trust which his ! will created, and this year £12,000" isavailahle for division. . The annual meeting of the board of governors of tae T. G._ Macartay Trust was held in tae Executive Council room, Parliament Buildings, today. There were present:— His Exeellency the Governor-General, Lord Bledisloe; tae Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forhes; Archbishop Redwood; tae Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and the Public Trusfee, Mr. J. W. Macdonald, C.M.G., who is chairman of the advisory committee to tae board. ' * In regard to tae amount which w;as being distrihuted hy tae board, tae ; Public Trustee explained taat, in a.ccordance with the provisions of tae will for tae present only one-half .^of tae income from the residuary estate is availahle for distribution among tae eligible philanthropic ohjects. Many Anxieties In anaking reference to tae exceptional difficulties and anxieties which are being experienced in regard. to ccmmercial financial and business interests, tae Public Trustee stated: — "I regret taat tae general economiq *' depression has continued ,to affect, often with dramatic intensity, the circumstances of nearly eviry individual in the commnnity, with the result that the difficulties and responsibilities surrounding the administration of a trust holding such large interests as does th'3 T. G. Macartay Trust have largely increased." Grants to Many Institutions Grants were made to some 114 institutions. The largest single grant was one of of £900 to the Anglican City Mission. Other large grants were as. under: — St. Joseph's Orpanage, Upper Hutt, £675; Home of Compassion, £600; Home for Incurables, £450 (including £200 to be expended solely for tae relief of poverty and distress) St. Thomas' Boys' School, £445; St. Mary's Gnild, £400; Plnnket Soc'ety, Wellington, £400; Anglican Boys' Homes Society, £350; St. Vincent de Paul Society, Wellington, £350; Free Kindergarten Association, £300. ffn addition to tae Wellington Plunket Society, 17 branches in Wellington Province received grants totalling £825. Individual grants wefe made also to a large- numher of Roman Catholie orphanages, schools and homes, and to Salvation Army homes and hostels, as well as other institutions and associations of various activities.
